For the first time since Iran Hostage Crisis in 1980, Americans will be living in Iran for the first time. These Americans will be Boeing employees such as technicians and support staff, so why Boeing employees?
This week, the United States Treasury Department gave the okay for Iran to purchase western-produced aircraft directly such as Boeing's 737. Following the hostage crisis and the Iranian Revolution, sanctions were imposed on Iran that banned the sale of western aircraft because Iran was seen as a major enemy with intentions of contracting nuclear weapons (Erdbrink, 2016).
The removal of this sanction comes with the Iran Nuclear Deal between the USA and Iran. Sanctions are slowly being lifted on Iran by the United States in order for the United States to be able to monitor their nuclear program, making sure no nuclear weapons are being made (Erdbrink, 2016). Iran claims the nuclear program is strictly used for producing power.
According to Erdbrink (2016), Republicans in congress are furious, claiming that Iran should not have access to western aircraft because they believe Iran is lying to the United States and producing nuclear weapons with their nuclear reactors.
Although it is great American businesses are spreading into new markets, I still personally view Iran as a threat and that they don't deserve the right to purchase western-made aircraft. Any country where the majority of the people march through the streets chanting "Death to America" should not be able to have access to our best in the world aviation industry.
