A Beer Dynasty

The world's largest brewing company, Anheuser-Busch Inbev,  is only getting bigger. Shareholders this week approved a $100 billion dollar deal that would allow AB Inbev to take total control of the world's second largest brewing company, SAB Miller (Bray, 2016).

This acquisition would mean that AB Inbev would be accountable for brewing just over one out of every four beers consumed throughout our world and would generate upwards of $55 billion in revenue per year (Bray, 2016).

The biggest advantage for AB Inbev in this deal is the new market opportunities in Africa and Latin America, where SAB Miller has many regional breweries in countries like Botswana, Peru and Ecuador (Bray, 2016). This is huge for AB Inbev because these smaller countries already have their "official" regional beers that the locals strictly only drink. Entering these markets with no real connection to the people and region would lead to complete failure.

I personally think it is awful that these brewing giants are coming together to form one giant company. With so much of the world's beer market being dominated by a single company, this takes away so much competition. This will lead to higher beer prices and a decrease in the need to do much better in order to beat the competitor. I am afraid that one day, the beer market will be a total monopoly that provides average beer and high costs. Competition is a necessity for a well-functioning market.

The First Americans in Modern Iran

For the first time since Iran Hostage Crisis in 1980, Americans will be living in Iran for the first time. These Americans will be Boeing employees such as technicians and support staff, so why Boeing employees?

This week, the United States Treasury Department gave the okay for Iran to purchase western-produced aircraft directly such as Boeing's 737. Following the hostage crisis and the Iranian Revolution, sanctions were imposed on Iran that banned the sale of western aircraft because Iran was seen as a major enemy with intentions of contracting nuclear weapons (Erdbrink, 2016).

The removal of this sanction comes with the Iran Nuclear Deal between the USA and Iran. Sanctions are slowly being lifted on Iran by the United States in order for the United States to be able to monitor their nuclear program, making sure no nuclear weapons are being made (Erdbrink, 2016). Iran claims the nuclear program is strictly used for producing power.

According to Erdbrink (2016), Republicans in congress are furious, claiming that Iran should not have access to western aircraft because they believe Iran is lying to the United States and producing nuclear weapons with their nuclear reactors.

Although it is great American businesses are spreading into new markets, I still personally view Iran as a threat and that they don't deserve the right to purchase western-made aircraft. Any country where the majority of the people march through the streets chanting "Death to America" should not be able to have access to our best in the world aviation industry.

At this time last year, I was preparing to visit Munich, Germany, to attend the world famous Oktoberfest. This southern Germany festival consists of listening to traditional German music while seated in large beer halls with thousands of people from every corner of the world while consuming mass amounts of German beer and food. I knew this would be a weekend of having much fun with friends and other students abroad, but I had no idea of how massive Oktoberfest in Munich really is until I saw the official numbers from this past year.

According to the official page of Oktoberfest, oktoberfest.net, 7.2 million people attended this three week event, consuming 6.9 million liters (one liter equals one beer) of traditional Bavarian Oktoberfest style beer which have a much higher content of alcohol compared to your normal beer. At approximately ten dollars per beer, around $69 million worth of beer was sold.

Beer isn't the only Oktoberfest icon though. Famous German dishes such as sausages, schnitzels and much more are sold at every stand. In this year alone, people visiting Oktoberfest consumed 549,899 pieces of chicken, 140,225 pork pairs, 44,320 kg of fish and 75,456 pork shanks.

These numbers are absolutely stunning and almost unfathomable. It's amazing that it is even possible to hold such a massive festival. Having been one of the most fun weekends of my life, I plan on going back to Oktoberfest in Munich as soon as I possibly can.

First Blog/Introduction

Hello readers and fellow bloggers,

My name is Tyler May and I am a senior at Saint Louis University. I am pursuing a dual major in finance and international business, with the hopes of working abroad with international banks or conducting trade agreements in the near future.

After reading a few of my blogs, you will easily be able to recognize my strong passion for international business and globalization. It all started when I traveled to Germany with a group from school my sophomore year of high school. Right then I knew living/working abroad would be a major goal in my life.

Fast forward six years later and I have made it to Europe two additional times, once to study in Madrid, Spain, at SLU's campus in the fall of 2015. Studying in Madrid was the greatest experience I have ever had in my life. Having the opportunity to travel to different countries throughout Europe every weekend and experiencing so many different cultures first-hand was almost surreal.

European business tends to be my favorite topic in international business, cases such as Brexit, so hopefully you will learn something new while reading my blogs. This world is becoming so globalized yet most people fail to recognize this.
